Guided Helvellyn Horseshoe Walk

Experience one of the Lake District's most iconic mountain adventures on our fully guided Helvellyn Horseshoe walk. This classic route combines breathtaking scenery, exhilarating ridge walking and the satisfaction of reaching England's third-highest mountain.

Led by an experienced and qualified Mountain Leader, this guided walk is perfect for anyone looking to enjoy a memorable day in the fells with the reassurance of expert guidance. Whether it's your first visit to Helvellyn or you've always wanted to experience the famous ridges safely, we'll ensure you have an enjoyable, informative and rewarding day in the mountains.

The Route

Our journey begins in Glenridding, where we'll follow well-established mountain paths towards Birkhouse Moor, gradually gaining height before reaching the start of the legendary Striding Edge.

After a full safety briefing, we'll carefully make our way along this spectacular Grade 1 scramble. With dramatic drops on either side and incredible views across the Lake District, Striding Edge offers one of the most exciting mountain experiences in the UK.

From the end of the ridge, we'll make the final ascent to the summit of Helvellyn (950m), where there will be time to relax, enjoy lunch and take in the panoramic views stretching across the surrounding fells.

Our descent follows the equally impressive Swirral Edge, another narrow ridge that provides a thrilling but manageable finish to the day before we descend past Red Tarn and return to Glenridding.

The route covers approximately:

  • Distance: 15 km

  • Ascent: Approximately 1,200 metres

  • Duration: 4–6 hours

The exact route may be adapted to suit weather conditions, group ability and mountain safety.
